Toronto: Shameless Name Dropping 2011

Imagine my delight to meet so many old friends at this celebration book
launch at Harry Boyd’s & Lynda Robinson’s home in Toronto.
Peter Benison, one of Canada’s finest cinematographers,
made his first feature with Paul in 1970.
Veronica Tenant, CC., the world famous ballerina, led the
National Ballet of Canada for years, is now a film producer.
Colleen Kenny, a soloist in the 50s with the Nation Ballet of Canada,
used to babysit Stephanie, Paul’s step-daughter,
who also danced with the National.
Derek Leebosh, a political commentator, is a major pollster.
Vivian Leebosh with Marion Fitzgerald, super chef and a friend of the Boyds.
Derek, Vivian’s son, with his step-father Ralph Thomas, playwright,
screenwriter, and Exec Producer of the ground-breaking
“for the Record”, with Josey Vogels, and Vivian Leebosh,
herself a producer and now “Miss Real Estate” of Santa Barbara, CA.
Norman Orenstein, himself a fine composer, is the son of Paul’s
old friend Leo, who directed in the Golden Years of Canadian television drama.
John Board, film producer, who was Paul’s 1st AD on Act of the Heart
and Alan Golubov (with wife Linda) a well-known director, who was the
dynamic President of the DGC (Director’s Guild of Canada).
Ksenia Shubina is not only striking, she’s also a computer whizz, chosen out
of hundreds of applicants this spring to join Google.
Her father (an atomic scientist) and her mother, Irina, a translator,
living in Moscow, are both friends of Paul.
Gloria Varley, writer and food columnist for 25 years with Toronto Life,
knew Paul in the 50s on his return from Oxford.
David Gardner, actor, director, lecturer, artist, with his daughter Jenny,
 talking to our hostess Lynda.
Ksenia attended York University where Don Rickard was the Registrar.
Don was at Balliol with Paul, and played hockey
on the Oxford Hockey team with Paul,
opposite Harry Boyd who played for Cambridge.
Don Coles, one of Canada’s top poets, with hostess Lynda,
herself chief Exec of Advance Placement in Canadian schools.
Dave Broadfoot, OC, the great comedian, (Air Farce) known
also for his depiction of the MP from Kicking Horse Pass.
My lovely god-daughter, Cassie Scott.  Her father, Peter Dale Scott, probably
Canada’s finest poet, is also a major academic investigator of “deep politics”
behind important US events such as: The Gulf of Tonkein, Reagan and
the Contras, the Kennedy assassination, 9/11, and his recent book:
The War Machine.  She bicycles everywhere, as does Neil Affleck, a film producer.
Joan and Cassie sitting with two ballet dancers and others watching.
Jack Rutherford, who worked in the 50s as Paul’s Studio Director on
many shows, was the handsomest member of CBC’s drama department.
Here with Leo’s son, Norman.

  1. These photos - many of them my old friends - capture the enthusiasm of anyone who connects with Paul and his work. He is appreciative of his friends' wide variety of talents, and so open about sharing his heart with them.
